First a little history on the city of Odessa itself. Starting out as a Greek settlement which later turned into part of the Ottoman Empire, Russian Empress Catherine the Great founded Odessa Ukraine by decree in 1794. The city quickly became the hub for craftsman from all of Europe and also from Greece. It wasn’t long before this fishing industry town became a free port for the grain industry in the 1800’s. Prosperity didn’t last long as things turned for the worse, Famine,revolution, and war all the way to World War II had a great influence for many years. Now though the city is once again vibrant and full of life. As the saying goes “Pearl by the Black Sea” is exactly what you will discover when visiting Odessa Ukraine.

Pilaf with Mussels

Pilaf, or what was originally called “Plov” was brought to the region by a confederation of East Slavic and Finnic conquering peoples. Cooked in a seasoned broth and traditionally prepared with lamb or horse meat, Odessa has put its own spin on the dish. It is now made instead with Black Sea mussels with a rich and briny flavor. If you are lucky enough to know a local or have a tour guide that can hook you up with a done for you meal right on the beach made from locally caught mussels you are certainly going to give your taste buds a treat.
